Why Was I In Iowa #climatereality

Why was I in IowaMany people have asked me why I was in Iowa earlier this month. I had an amazing opportunity to train with Al Gore and see his presentation up close and personal presented by him at Climate Reality training. Having Al Gore train you on his Inconvenient Truth slideshow is an amazing experience. He is, as you know from seeing the movie, an amazing presenter and speaker. He is engaging with the audience and keeps your attention the entire time even when he is presenting heavy science and bar graphs. I told my husband when I called him from the training that I am happy Al Gore is using these skills to talk about climate change because he could probably sell anything to anyone. I mean that in the most positive way, he makes a connection with his audience in a masterful way and makes detailed information easy to understand.

Who else was there with me? The training was amazing that the connections were also just as amazing.
I was there with millennial’s in high school and college. I was there with the original environmentalists who remember the first Earth Day. [Read more…]

We Were 4 Of The 400,000 #PeoplesClimateMarch

Peoples Climate MarchYesterday my family and I went on what is normally a short daily journey for me to New York City. Today we were on a longer journey because we were bringing a 5 and 3 year old in to the city on a weekend. All joking aside it is hard work to bring kids in to an event like this but my husband and I really wanted to do this with them. So be brought the double stroller and our Ergo along with an entire backpack full of snacks and water to be a part of The Peoples Climate March.

For those of you who did not attend or know much about it, the march was organized so that like minded groups assembled at certain areas of Central Park West so they could walk together. There were religious groups, unions, parent groups and many other groups assembled from 59th street all the way up to 89th street!! The march went on similar route of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade to give you an idea of just how big this was. [Read more…]

Will You Make History? #PeoplesClimate

pcm-march-with-orange-background-2-01In one month, I am going to take my family to New York City and we are going to make history with thousands of other families. We are going to tell all the world leaders who are in town for the UN Summit that we want our voice heard and we want them to do something about Climate Change. I have not been able to participate in other climate marches in the past so I was so happy to learn about The People’s Climate March in the early stages of planning. I marked my calendar immediately and told my husband we were ALL going. [Read more…]

My Meat Consumption Is Ruining The Planet

VegetarianI have thought long and hard about what I am going to say in this post and have not discussed it with one person. I have decided to become a part-time vegetarian. Now before you accuse me of making up a term that is code for a cope out here me out.

Americans eat 12 ounces of meat per day. I am not sure if I eat that much but until recently I did not think that much about my meat consumption. I admittedly consume meat at breakfast on occasion, I love bacon and sausage a lot. I eat meat at lunch sometimes I get hamburgers from the fresh burger place around the corner. Other times for lunch I will get braised beef or meatballs with my veggies at my favorite local food restaurant.

Meat consumption has a huge effect on climate change. A 2006 UN report estimated that 18% of man-made green house gases came from meat consumption. A 2008 article in World Watch magazine estimated it might be as high as 50%! Regardless of the actual percentage reducing my meat consumption is basically a free and immediate change I can make to help reduce my personal CO2 emissions. [Read more…]
