7 Ways To Prevent Pesticide Exposure When You Are Pregnant

Prevent Pesticide Exposure When You Are PregnantThis week the first study of its kind came out showing a direct link between a pregnant woman’s exposure to pesticides and Autism. While this is scary news at least it is some definitive research on what might be one cause of Autism. With knowledge like this we can make smart decisions to reduce our risk and exposure to pesticides.

Limiting your pesticide exposure when you are pregnant is a good idea regardless of the results of this study. Here are 7 things you can do to prevent pesticide exposure:

Eat Organic Fruits and Veggies. While this may sound hard or expensive it does not have to be. Eating fruits and veggies that are in season makes it more affordable to eat organic. Go to your local farmers market, often times [Read more…]

Trying To Save The World From Toxic Chemicals

USAChemicals scare me, I do my best to study up on what chemicals to avoid and try very hard to limit my children’s exposure at home where I have control over it. But we all know that none of us live in a bubble, chemicals are all around us. Since I am not chemist, biologist or any other “ist” I do not really know everything I need to know either.

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum most people would agree they want some general protections of their health and safety. Chemical safety is far behind most countries including some developing countries. Last week I went to Washington DC to try to address this with our senators. [Read more…]

What I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Had Kids

I have a few friends who recently became parents… One with twins born yesterday! Here is the advice I would give to myself five years ago on parenting particularly the early days.

Pic kids 052Dear New Mom and Dad,

Congrats you are probably a huge mix of emotions right now…excited and scared that is normal. You are worried about leaving the safety of the hospital and all the experts around you. It is comforting but your baby only needs you two… Even the friends who visit are really there to support you so you can take care of the baby.

Breast feeding is very hard but so good for the baby so try it. When you are in the hospital should use the help I the staff there to help you figure out positioning and feel more comfortable. If you still have a hard time ask a close friends for help or call a lactation specialist it is better money spent than almost any gadget you registered for I promise. [Read more…]

Kids Holiday Gift Guide

Green Gift Ideas for KidsKids usually know what they want for the holidays but sometimes we need to think outside the box. Some of my favorite gifts from my childhood were things I did not ask for but was so happy I received. Kids also appreciate the gift of experience and your attention so a gift guide would not be complete without some ideas of “things” to give kids that are not a thing at all.

Live Good Organic Blanket: One of my favorite gifts for babies is a Live Good organic blanket. Live Good works hard to make organic, made in the USA products that honor the planet and is created in a fair work environment. My son has a Live Good blanket and he loves to sleep with it. This is a the perfect gift for a newborn to 5-year-old.

Dolphin Organics Shampoo and Body Wash: Sometimes mom’s and dad’s do not know about chemicals and what to avoid in babies bath soap and shampoo but Dolphin Organics has got you covered. They make organic and natural baby products that do not contain harmful chemicals that are found in many commonly used brands. My favorite is the Northfork Lavender set that includes Baby Shampoo & Body Wash, Bubble Bath, and Hypoallergenic Lotion and SPF32 mineral sunscreen. [Read more…]
